Twitter 创立于 2006 年 3 月 21 日，上周末刚完过其 9 岁生日。官方部落格发表了一篇文章，带领用户回顾 9 年来具有里程碑意义的重要时刻。 用户可以发表不超过 140 个字“推文”，加上主题标签（hashtag），讯息被快速地散播出去，这就是 Twitter。虽然在台湾忠实的推友较少数，但是在欧美日韩等地区，Twitter 的社群影响力与新闻传播力可是相当重要。
由 Twitter 2014 年第四季的财报显示，该季公司营收为 4.79 亿美元（约台币 151.2 亿元），较 2013 年同期成长 97%；亏损 1.25 亿美元（约台币 39.5 亿元），低于 2013 年同期的 5.11 亿美元。截至 2014 年 12 月 31 日为止，月活跃用户数为 2.88 亿，比 2013 年同期成长 20%。
